TorGuard™ is everything wrong with consumer securityI was just browsing around, and Googling some things related to Tor and it's ongoing development. I then found an interesting VPN product. This is a VPN like any other, except it also adds Tor transproxying (much like my systems use), so unlike any other VPN it can add the risk of Tor exits. On an unrelated note, my system uses my own private clearnet systems for that traffic, and only .onion access is provided by Tor transparently. This is a stupid idea, and this is a VPN product intended to secure clearnet access while throwing away their control of where traffic exits at the same time. It is a dumb gimmick, but somehow a solvent business. This I think illustrates what is really going wrong here, where consumers thing they can buy security and that homehow TorGuard might even add anything to this world. It doesn't, it is fruadulent, and dangerous. It is also hilarous.
The above screenshot is the pinacle of irony, as my access from my clearnet exit on my workstation here is being blocked by this company, who are using CloudFlare. The screenshot above is a Javascript free version of that page, and I think I could solve a captcha for these people. At the end of the day, these fucking scammers can't even protect their own systems and outsource that. Cloudflare will not be protecting your outbound traffic. As to reach their middlebox, you require internet, this means your box will have more leakage issues than running Tor on localhost. I am not sure if it even allows onion access. Be sure to tell your Mom and Grandma not to be fooled by this bullshit. You can't just buy good security on the cheap, you can't take anything for granted. People need to stop assuming that adding Tor will magically make anything more secure. If you want to VPN your clearnet access for when you are on public wifi, using nearly anything else but TorGuard is going to do that job. If you really need a private VPN with well scrutinized open source software, you can just run a nice script on your own server. In all those other darkweb related issues, I made exit kit to show you the tools and teach you how to use them, and that is how I secure my clearnet access. |
